We Buy Coins

If you’re looking for a fair local coin buyer, you’ve come to the right place! We buy coins and pay cash everyday. Some clients collected their coins over years. Others inherited them. In any case, many coins are valuable and well worth your time to bring in and show us.

Midlands Gold buys coins of all kinds: 999 coins, old US coins, rounds, tokens, and more. Primarily, we buy coins made of gold, silver, and platinum. Even if you don’t know anything about coins, we can help you sort out the situation with a simple phone call or a short visit.

Gold Coin Buyer

All gold coins are composed of pure or nearly pure yellow gold. Krugerrands and Eagles are 91.67% pure; that’s 22-karat gold. The rest are 99.9% or 99.99% pure. These are referred to as “three nines fine” and “four nines fine”, respectively.

Standard size gold coins contain a full troy ounce of gold. Fractional coins (identical but smaller versions) range in size from 1 gram up to a 1/2 ounce of gold content. Real gold coins specify their gold content somewhere in their design.

We buy gold coins frequently, which include the following:

  • US Gold Eagles (91.67%)
  • US Gold Buffalos (99.99%)
  • Canadian Gold Maple Leafs (99.99%)
  • South African Gold Krugerrands (91.67%)
  • Mexican Gold Libertads (99.9%)
  • British Gold Britannias (99.99%)
  • Chinese Gold Pandas (99.9%)
  • Gold Vienna Philharmonics (99.99%)

Platinum Coin Buyer

Platinum coins are the least common among the three major precious metals. Platinum makes strong jewelry, but it’s value as an investment is speculative. The price has fluctuated wildly since we first opened as a gold buyer in 2008.

One troy ounce is the standard size for precious metal coins. However, smaller platinum coins range from 1 to 30 grams. Interestingly, the smallest and largest are Chinese Pandas. Otherwise the same fractional sizes apply here.

Platinum coins we buy commonly include the following:

  • Platinum Eagles (99.95%)
  • Platinum Maple Leafs (99.95 or 99.99%)
  • Platinum Britannias (99.95%)
  • Platinum Pandas (99.9%)
  • Platinum Philharmonics (99.95%)
we buy platinum coins too

We Buy .999 Silver Coins

Silver is a precious metal, like gold and platinum. Yet it is the most affordable option, by far. Buying silver coins is an easy and popular way to invest in precious metals, on a budget.

Silver coins come in two basic varieties. Pure silver coins are composed of .999 silver, which we talk about here. Old US silver coins contain 90% silver, and we’ll discuss them next. Pure silver coin weights range from the novelty-sized 1/20 troy ounce coin to an entire kilogram.

We are a buyer of silver coins, including the following:

  • Silver Eagles (99.9%)
  • Silver Maple Leafs (99.99%)
  • Silver Krugerrands (99.9%)
  • Silver Libertads (99.9%)
  • Silver Pandas (99.9%)
  • Silver Philharmonics (99.9%)

We Buy 90% Silver Coins

A lifetime ago, the value and production of our money was tied to America’s gold and silver reserves. During that period, many U.S. coins contained actual silver. Specifically, they were made of 90% silver.

Starting in 1965, the Federal Reserve phased out production of those silver coins. From 1965-1969, only “silver-clad” half dollars contained any silver (40%). Over time, most silver coins were filtered out of circulation by collectors. Now they’re stockpiled by silver stackers but forgotten by most people.

We buy old US silver coins, including the following:

  • Pre-1965 US Dimes (90% silver)
  • Pre-1965 US Quarters (90% silver)
  • Pre-1965 US Half Dollars (90% silver)
  • Pre-1965 US Silver Dollars (90%)
  • 1965-69 US Kennedy Half Dollars (40% silver)
we buy old us silver coins that are 90%

Buying Silver Rounds

Silver rounds are like silver coins inasmuch as they’re composed of .999 pure silver (sometimes sterling). However, you can note two key differences. First, silver rounds are privately minted. Second, they come in limitless designs.

There countless different novelty rounds, collector rounds, commemorative rounds and tribute rounds. They range from a troy ounce to a kilogram. You can find rounds that celebrate baseball, Ford Mustangs, cowboys and anything else.

We buy silver rounds, minted by these producers and others:

  • APMEX (American Precious Metals Exchange)
  • Engelhard
  • Silvertowne
  • RMC (Republic Metals Corp)
  • Sunshine Minting Inc.
  • Scottsdale Mint
  • Golden State Mint

What About Other Coins?

We buy coins of all kinds. Yet Midlands Gold is not a coin shop. So we don’t deal in rare coins with only numismatic value. However, when clients bring us their relative’s old jewelry, sterling flatware, or gold and silver bars, they often present a handful of common old coins too. Feel free to do this; if we’re interested, we’ll pay extra for them.

Do you have coins to sell? Wondering how the process works? Come to Midlands Gold, and get a great price for your coins in a comfortable, relaxed, and private office setting.

Usually, unmarked rounds are not actual silver. Almost every 999 silver coin and round displays its purity somewhere on its face. This tells you its composition at a glance, and it’s a selling point. Coins and rounds without the purity marking are ferrous replicas in nearly all cases.

We’ve seen plenty of counterfeit coins. Ebay is full of them, especially fake Morgan Dollars and Silver Eagles, because they’re popular with collectors. People buy these phony “replica” coins thinking they’re real, either because the listing was deceptively worded or they didn’t read the details clearly. Pro tip: if the price is enticingly low, it’s fake.

No. They’re not worth anything.

No. Copper rounds are a novelty.

Yes, sometimes. Many countries used to produce silver coins for circulation. Some of those coins hold value, other contain so little silver that it’s not worth the trouble to recover. We buy foreign silver coins when clients bring them in alongside other items.

Yes, sometimes. Midlands Gold is primarily a gold and silver buyer–not a coin collector. We don’t grade coins or buy coins where a difference in grade substantially alters the value.

In general, besides gold and silver coins, we buy sealed coins and common old coins:

* Graded Coins
* Proof Sets
* Half-Cents
* Large Cents
* Two Cents
* Three Cents (“III”)
* Buffalo Nickels & Liberty Head Nickels (“V”)
* Half Dimes

Yes, sometimes. For example, we buy silver certificates. We even buy some scripophily (historical financial documents) like old war bonds and antique stock certificates. These types of items are far more speculative than precious metals. So there may be some negotiation to find a suitable buying price.
