Scrap Gold Jewelry Buyer

handful of scrap gold jewelry for buyer

“Scrap gold” is a vague general term. It can mean damaged or broken jewelry, or just old jewelry that you don’t want anymore. Some buyers refer to all pre-owned jewelry as “scrap jewelry”. We only call gold “scrap” here on this website, because some people search online for “buy scrap gold”.

Clients sell items to us for many reasons. Some of the jewelry we buy is broken, but most of it is in decent condition. Even a damaged piece may be special to you because of the story behind it. Or maybe you really don’t want to sell the item, but you have an overriding reason for doing so.

So when you call or come in to sell your gold, Midlands Gold won’t call your jewelry “scrap”, because we respect the memories it may represent.

We Buy Jewelry of All Kinds

About Gold Jewelry

Most varieties of gold jewelry are actually gold alloys. This means the gold is mixed with other metals, such as copper and nickel. The reason 10K gold costs less than 18K gold is because it’s less pure; there is less actual gold in 10K gold jewelry.

Pure gold is a deep yellow. The reason 18K gold has a deeper yellow color than 14K gold is because it’s less diluted. Likewise, adjusting the ratios of the other metals can change the color of the alloy too. For instance, white gold jewelry is made by adding more nickel to the mixture.

Gold ranges from 8K (common in the United Kingdom) to 24K (common in parts of Asia and the Middle East). Therefore, different kinds of gold have different values. The value and buying price of each depends solely on the amount of gold contained in it.

Gold Jewelry We Buy

Midlands Gold has been buying jewelry since 2008. We buy all gold jewelry, regardless of purity, color, or other variety. If you don’t see your item on this list, please call and ask about it; we’ll be glad to answer your questions.

  • 8-Karat Gold, 8K or 333
  • 9-Karat Gold, 9K or 267
  • 10-Karat Gold, 10K or 417
  • 14-Karat Gold. 14K or 585
  • 18-Karat Gold, 18K or 750
  • 22-Karat Gold, 22K or 917
  • 24-Karat Gold, 24K or 999
  • Yellow Gold
  • White Gold (higher nickel content)
  • Rose Gold (higher copper content)

Sterling Silver Jewelry

Most silver jewelry is “sterling”. This standard indicates the item is 92.5% pure silver. Clean and polished sterling silver is just as shiny as other precious metals, yet more affordable.

On the other hand, silver jewelry is far less valuable than gold. It would take 60 silver rings to equal the value of one same-sized 14K gold ring. That’s a big difference. In addition, silver jewelry usually sells at a higher premium than gold.

Ultimately, this means two things to you. First, only large loads of silver jewelry add up to a significant price. This is why we can pay so much for heavy sterling silver flatware sets. Second, we gladly buy silver jewelry alongside other more valuable items (like gold jewelry, coins, and bars). However, we simply can’t afford to schedule appointments just to buy a few pieces of silver jewelry.

Gold Plated Jewelry

Gold plated jewelry is comprised of a steel core and covered with a thin electroplated layer. Gold-filled jewelry is similar, except the core metal is brass. Heavy gold electroplate and rolled gold jewelry are two more varieties. Some types of gold plated items cost more than others, but all contain only tiny amounts of gold.

From a precious metal perspective, gold plated jewelry is nearly worthless. Midlands Gold doesn’t make appointments only for gold electroplated jewelry. However, we pay extra for it when you bring it alongside actual gold jewelry.

Costume Jewelry

Costume jewelry does not contain any precious metal. Lots of costume jewelry features colorful beads and interesting embellishments. Any gold or silver parts are just colored. There’s nothing at all wrong with wearing costume jewelry, but Midlands Gold doesn’t buy it.

It’s very common for clients to bring us boxes of mixed jewelry. The jewelry may have belonged to a parent or grandparent originally. So the clients think some pieces are gold and aren’t sure about other pieces. As long as you’re serious about selling it, we’re happy to sort through it all for you. If there’s costume jewelry left afterwards, we can refer you to somebody who might buy that too.

Jewelry Buying Service

Do want a great price for your jewelry? Then bring it to Midlands Gold. It only takes a few minutes for a few pieces. If you have a box of items, we’ll save you the trouble of sifting through it. After sorting your items, we’ll offer our best price to buy your jewelry and pay you on the spot.

Yes, we buy silver jewelry. Silver is a lovely precious metal, but it’s far less valuable than gold. So a few silver necklaces aren’t worth much, and there’s nothing we can do about that. Therefore, we purchase silver jewelry only in large loads or alongside other valuable items.

We buy gold plated and gold-filled jewelry, but only alongside other valuable items.

No. Midlands Gold doesn’t perform jewelry appraisals.

Yes, however jewelry appraisals are created for insurance companies. They state a value for you to purchase an adequate policy to cover damage, theft or loss of the item. The appraisal is supposed to estimate the retail value of the item. In practice, appraisals set values far above retail prices. In short, they’re very inflated, especially relative to any piece’s precious metal content.

We take good care of our clients. Many of them say they’re surprised we paid so much. Midlands Gold will offer you our best price, but it won’t be on par with any exhorbitant apraisal.

No. A jewelry appraisal is supposed to state the approximate retail cost to replace your item. All appraisals greatly overestimate this value. Appraisals are used for insurance purposes only and far exceed the value of an item’s precious metal content.

Yes, sometimes, but keep a few things in mind. First, diamond values vary widely, based on color, clarity, cut, and carat (weight). Most consumers don’t know much about this. Second, wholesale diamond values are less than many people expect. They don’t realize that retail jewelry is prices reflect the maximum that people are willing to pay, not its actual market value. Third, competition from lab diamonds has brought down natural diamond prices substantially over the past few years too.

We will offer you our best price for your diamond jewelry. We add a little for melee, which are tiny accent diamonds. We can pay more for larger pieces, especially if they come with some kind of documentation.

Look for any of the following markings on your gold or platinum jewelry:
* 10K or 417 means 10-karat gold.
* 14K, 583, or 585 means 14-karat gold.
* 18K or 750 means 18-karat gold.
* 800, 850, 900 and 950, alongside PT or PLAT, mean Platinum

You don’t have to figure out these details, though. If you know your jewelry is real, just bring it in. If you think it’s 10K, and we determine it’s 18K, we’ll tell you and pay more for it. That’s how we do business.

Years of wear can rub off gold jewelry markings completely. Repairs can remove these markings too. Many handcrafted pieces aren’t marked to begin with. Usually, jewelry markings are difficult to see without adequate magnification anyway. If you believe that some of your unmarked jewelry is gold or silver, bring those pieces in too. We’ll be glad to look at them.
